About the B.A. Program in Teaching English (TEFL)

The B.A. program of Teaching English as a Foreign Language is currently offered by the Department of English, which belongs to the Faculty of Education and Languages of UNAN-Managua. Since its foundation in 1965, the English Department has been in the vanguard of education by training teachers of English of the educational system of Nicaragua.

The department has graduated 85% of teachers from across the country. Currently, the English Department offers the program in three different schedules regular (from Monday to Friday), Saturday (for in-service teachers mainly), and online (at the students convenience). This has made of the Department of English one of the largest educational units of the Faculty of Education and Languages with more than 600 students. As a result, the department has a very significant impact in the training and development of English teachers in the national educational system.

  • Completion of all of the required courses of the program
  • A minimum passing grade of 60 in the graduation option chosen
  • Command of English as a foreign language at a technical level of comprehension.

Occupational Profile

Students graduating from the program of Teaching English as a Foreign Language can apply for positons as teachers, supervisors, and consultants in the different sub-systems of the national educational system. That is, they can work as teachers, supervisor, and consultants in public and private institutions, and even at the university level.

Apart from positions in the teaching field, students finishing the program can work for variety of institutions that require good command of English such as call centers, travel agencies, non-governmental organizations, and translation and interpretation agencies, among other related fields.
